In the heart of Bemidji, located at the southern border of the Red Lake Tribe along State Route 89, rises the gleaming Seven Clans Casino, Hotel and Event Center. Opened to the public in 2009, the $21 million complex has since established itself as a leading destination for entertainment and culture. The Fusion of Culture and Luxury
The architects, DSGW of Duluth, sought to marry luxury with cultural significance, creating a destination that resonates with Red Lake’s heritage. Walking into the Seven Clans Casino, you are greeted by a “big Las Vegas feel” intertwined with strong symbols of Red Lake culture. Wood paneling, rock veneer, and images of the wavy blue lake echo themes of the region, while woodland floral carpet patterns and hotel rooms named after the seven major Red Lake clans – Bear, Turtle, Bullhead, Eagle, Mink, Pine Marten, and Kingfisher – honor the local culture.
Even the swimming pool is shaped like Red Lake itself, further embedding the spirit of the region into the fabric of the complex.
A Testament to the Power of Community
This cultural landmark came to fruition through the concerted efforts of the Red Lake Nation. The construction, which began in fall 2008, was under the supervision of Woodstone Builders, Inc. of the Twin Cities. Tribal members were consulted extensively in the design process, ensuring an authentic reflection of their heritage. Treasurer Darrell Seki proudly noted that the complex not only came in under budget but also created over 50 new jobs for Red Lake people, a testament to the power of community and economic resilience.
Luxury Accommodations and Vibrant Entertainment
The Seven Clans Casino features a hotel with 40 rooms, 20 of which boast fireplaces, and large master suites with 9-foot ceilings. Some rooms even offer hot tubs, providing a luxurious retreat for guests. The complex also boasts an event center with a capacity of up to 800 in straight-row seating, a 75-seat restaurant, a snack bar, a gift shop, and a 30-seat patio for outdoor dining.
A Gamblers’ Paradise
At the heart of the Seven Clans Casino is the gaming hall, which caters to a wide range of preferences with 300 machines, four blackjack tables, and two poker tables. Interestingly, the entire complex remains smoke-free, except for the gaming hall. However, it’s worth noting that as per Red Lake Nation laws, only non-alcoholic drinks are served.
Beyond the Casino: A Commitment to Growth
The opening of the Seven Clans Casino marked a significant upgrade from the previous gaming hall built on the north side of the Red Lake Humanities Center. However, the Red Lake Nation didn’t stop there. The next phase of expansion involved the construction of a full-service store and gas station in the spring, right next door to the casino, creating a comprehensive entertainment and service hub for locals and visitors alike.
The Road Ahead
The Seven Clans Casino, Hotel, and Event Center is more than just a gaming establishment. It’s a beacon of culture, a testament to the resilience of the Red Lake Nation, and an inviting destination for those seeking entertainment, luxury, and a dash of local history. As the Seven Clans Casino continues to evolve, it remains a shining star in the Midwest’s gaming landscape, setting the stage for future growth and innovation.
